The U.S. Green Building Council's program to streamline certification for large portfolios of property has awarded LEED ratings to more than 500 projects, the organization announced this week.

"Companies with a large collection of new builds or existing buildings are using the LEED Volume Program to transform their portfolios at a faster rate through a cost-effective, efficient process," said USGBC Senior Vice President Scot Horst, in a statement released Tuesday.

"Reaching this milestone underscores the industry's demand for high-performing, green buildings portfolio-wide and allows us to move further faster towards our goal of transforming the built environment," he said.

The LEED Volume pilot launched in 2006. Participants in the program include Citi, Kohl's, Office Depot, Wells Fargo, Marriott and Starwood's Element brand, which all pursued precertification for new construction.

Last month, the InterContinental Hotels Group became the first hospitality chain to obtain volume precertification under the LEED standard for Existing Buildings: Operations & Maintenance. Other major firms participating in the pilot for LEED-EBOM volume certification include Cushman & Wakefield and Bentall Kennedy.
