KIUC recently integrated a 28MW PV and 20 MW five-hour duration energy storage system. This will be the largest solar-plus-utility–scale-battery system in the state and one of the biggest storage systems in the world. The project will reduce KIUC’s fossil fuel usage by over 3.7 million gallons a year. KIUC members will also see reduced rates.
Peaker plants supply power only on occasion during peak/high demand periods. The power supplied commands a much higher price per kilowatt hour than a base load plant. Through solar + storage solutions, a renewable peaker can provide firm, renewable generation combined with a flexible dispatch schedule in order to displace inefficient, fuel-based peaking capacity.
