Join us for an update on the state of the market and round-table discussions that cover different aspects of developing a renewable energy strategy to fit your organization. Conversation topics to include:

  • Setting the vision and goals that work for your company

  • How to get internal buy-in from your team to execute an ambitious strategy

Crossing the Sustainability-Investor Chasm

Arizona Ballroom, Camelback Inn

2019 saw an unprecedented growth in interest in and consideration for ESG (environmental, social and governance) issues from companies, investors and now government, with the first congressional hearing on ESG issues in the United States held in July. This trend signals a growing recognition that climate change is not only detrimental to our environment, but also to our economic system, and that many issues that were once considered non-financial are now seen as financially material. Corporate disclosure is key to understanding risks and their corresponding exposures and opportunities. Hear from Ceres CEO and President Mindy Lubber why disclosure is so important, what new legislation could mean for companies and how your company can prepare — and lead — in this new age of transparency.

Chemical Recycling: Breaking It Down and Building the Market

Workshop
Paradise Ballroom 5-6, Camelback Inn

There’s been a growing buzz around chemical recycling, and the promise of transformational technologies that can close gaps in the current recycling system. More brands, retailers, cities and waste management firms are looking to chemical recycling as a quick fix to stop plastics pollution and cycle valuable materials back into the value chain. However, the technologies are not available at scale, the terminology and applications are not widely understood and the market is just beginning to emerge. This session will begin to break down the chemical recycling landscape in the context of circularity, considering systemic implications, appropriate applications and its role within a company’s overall portfolio of circular economy solutions.

The Urgency of Working Together for the Climate Results We Need

Workshop
Arizona Ballroom D-E, Camelback Inn

The climate crisis requires us to act fast and collectively, but how? As more companies are beginning to declare carbon neutral and net zero strategies and goals, it’s become clear that companies going down this path need to align on these definitions, set science-based goals, and balance residual emissions with insetting. Without clear direction to reach 1.5C, these goals and climate strategies can easily become muddled, irrelevant and risk deviating from sound scientific standards.

In this session, Quantis will use visualization exercises, audience engagement and peer-to-peer collaboration to explain:

  • Why companies are starting to move now even though we have known about climate issues for 50 years
  • What climate strategies are relevant to meet the 1.5C threshold for science-based targets and stay relevant for the long-term
  • What is the secret key to making the impossible possible

How Are Investors Integrating ESG in Decision Making?

Workshop
Arizona Ballroom J-K, Camelback Inn

Investors and financial institutions are increasingly integrating companies’ ESG performances into their decision-making, regardless of the type of investment class or type of asset. In parallel, the rise of new ESG-related products and services, such as thematic funds or sustainable linked loans, are all based on an investment’s overall ESG performance. How are investors and financial organizations engaging with companies to understand their ESG performance? How is the financial industry embracing ESG and integrating it into its products and decision-making? Are they focusing on the right things? This panel will explore how investors are engaging with companies to understand their ESG management and performance beyond disclosures and ESG ranking and rating agencies. During the session, the panelists will discuss:

  • How asset managers and financial institutions are using ESG ranking and ratings while performing their own analysis to understand the entire universe of risk
  • When and where the concept of materiality comes into play
  • Expectations from a management, governance and disclosure perspective and how they are changing
  • How companies are reacting to investors’ interest in ESG

Roundtable Lunch: Corporate Water Stewardship and the Importance of Certification

Roundtable Lunch

We all have expectations for corporate water stewardship, but how do you ensure maximum impact? By following the framework of a globally recognized standard. This requires not only a robust understanding of your own operations, but also the catchment in which you operate and the stakeholders you impact; only then are you ready to develop a water stewardship plan with appropriate context-based goals. The cherry on top is recognition by independent auditors of your water stewardship efforts. Roundtable Lunch: Leading Women for Sustainable Development

Roundtable Lunch

Women’s lack of representation in positions of leadership is broadly acknowledged throughout the business world. Yet business is falling short in rising to this challenge and considerable barriers still hold women back. Only 4% of leadership positions in Fortune 500 companies are held by women. 9 out of 10 Americans are convinced that pervasive preconceptions and a lack of support from mentors are key contributors to women’s lack of representation in top positions. Increasing the representation of women at the top of companies helps business not only to become more successful but also more sustainable. Join WBCSD for a discussion on empowering women to lead, featuring their new LEAP initiative (Leading Women for Sustainable Development) that aims to help women reach senior positions in their company and ensure that sustainability is embedded both in their leadership and their company’s strategy.

Roundtable Lunch: Climate Risk and Strategy – Getting Past the “Disclosure” in TCFD

Roundtable Lunch

The Task Force on Climate-Related Disclosures has helped motivate many companies to think about climate risk from a investor relations angle – “disclosure” is in the name. Yet, most of the value comes from the risk and strategic processes it encourages. Many processes only end up generating a limited amount of transparency for no real benefit to the firm or investors. At this session we will discuss the challenges and some of the solutions of getting TCFD to deliver value, rather than being just a another reporting burden.

Roundtable Lunch: Circularity in Practice — Exploring New Business Models

Roundtable Lunch
As organizations consider the shift from linear to circular, many are finding that  new business models can help unlock new value, transform customer relationships, and curb their environmental footprint. From selling products as a service to recommerce and rental to remanufacturing and more, these new — and old — business models offer the promise of progress towards aspirations of circularity. However, they also require a reengineering of internal systems, material flows, financial modeling, communications, sales cycles and nearly every piece of a business to evolve beyond the sell-it-and-forget-it approach of business-as-usual.
In this roundtable join GreenBiz’s Circular Economy Director & Senior Analyst, Lauren Phipps, for a lively discussion about what it takes to adopt circular business models, and troubleshoot with other attendees about how to overcome obstacles along your path towards circularity.

Roundtable Lunch: What Can Energy Efficiency Learn from Oil and Gas Exploration and Production?

Roundtable Lunch

The efficiency market is highly fragmented by both improvement measures and property types; one of the key limiting factors in efficiency realizing its full potential in helping to mitigate climate change. Hydrocarbon markets are the exact opposite. This session will consider how to structure efficiency opportunities in ways that mobilize and incentivize energy efficiency “explorers and producers”. What drives fragmentation and how can the market more effectively standardize and aggregate activity? What informs both the limits of using capex for energy efficiency and the quest for alternatives? How might an efficiency explorer and producer structure its business model and solutions?

How to Eliminate Food Waste on Your Corporate Campus

Workshop
Paradise Ballroom 5-6, Camelback Inn

It’s become well known that about a third of the world’s food  — worth roughly $1 trillion annually — is never eaten. And while you may be thinking about far-off farms and factories as the source of that waste, nearly 85 percent of food in the United States is wasted and lost at consumer-facing businesses and homes. But a growing number of foodservice operators are finding that curbing food waste simultaneously can keep edible food out of landfills and keep money in their pockets. In alignment with Target 12.3 of the Sustainable Development Goals, which focuses on cutting food waste and loss in half by 2030, restaurants save on average $7 in operating costs on average for every $1 they invested in reducing kitchen food waste, according to recent analysis. So what will it take for your campus to take a bite out of its food waste problem? From procurement strategy, data collection and menu planning to shifting kitchen and "eater" culture, food rescue and composting, this solutions-oriented breakout will help you get started on cutting down on campus food waste.

Standardizing for Scale: Creating Cross-Industry Frameworks for Responsible Supply Chains

Workshop
Arizona Ballroom D-E, Camelback Inn

As global businesses continue to increase their efforts to create more responsible supply chains, scalability has become a pressing issue. There’s a framework to address almost any industry and any issue within the supply chain, but as businesses develop their responsible sourcing strategies, how can they be sure which approach suits them best, and how their unique business needs might fit within those frameworks? At the same time, suppliers are under an increasing burden to provide data across a disparate set of information requests – and their ability to respond adequately is only getting worse. Is there a healthy balance between standardization, unique business approaches, and supplier bandwidth? This panel explores the landscape of industry frameworks for supply chain responsibility and makes the case that, through shared metrics and better platforms for collaboration, a state of harmony for responsible sourcing may be within reach after all.

The New Normal: Engaging Investor Relations, CFOs and Corporate Secretaries in Sustainability Decisions

Workshop
Arizona Ballroom J-K, Camelback Inn

Over 1,000 organizations have now completed their review of the recommendations of the Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) and are issuing responses to enhance their financial disclosures.  However, many responses are being siloed within corporate sustainability teams, and the involvement of other senior financial leaders is the exception when it should be the new normal.  Similarly, risk analysis work is often performed outside of traditional risk pathways. This panel will provide practical advice for sustainability teams on how best to engage the CFO, corporate secretaries and other financial executives in the development of TCFD-compliant financial and sustainability disclosures.

Assessing Physical and Climate Risks: Linking Risk Management and Sustainability Expertise

Workshop
Paradise Ballroom 7-8, Camelback Inn

Extreme weather and the associated physical risks are having increasing impacts on organizations’ assets, operations, supply chains and employees, and organizations are looking to better understand their current and future exposures. Currently, the focus of most corporate risk management efforts is on identifying, assessing and managing such risks to support business continuity and determine risk management approaches such as annual insurance purchasing. Risk managers assesses these risks using a variety of standard tools and methods which generally rely on historical data to determine future loss trends.  In contrast, sustainability professionals are focused on developing long-term forward-looking physical risk assessments and climate risk assessments which can be difficult to align with risk managers’ assessments. This session will provide an inside look at how risk managers assess physical and extreme weather risks, how this analysis can enhance and be supported by a sustainability team’s climate risks assessments, and tips on how to bridge departmental efforts and enhance the resilience of the enterprise to shifts in physical risk driven by climate change.

Deep Dive (1:45-3:30 pm at Mountain Shadows): Accelerating Systems Transformation Through Business Leadership

Workshop
Paradise Ballroom North, Mountain Shadows

With over three dozen leading companies, the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) is driving a collective, business-led effort to revisit its Vision 2050 – a landmark report issued a decade ago and focused on the opportunity for business to help unlock the transformations that are needed to allow over 9 billion people to live well, within the boundaries of the planet by mid-century. The final Vision 2050 output, to be completed by October of 2020, will provide business with the positive, opportunity-based, action agenda it needs for the decade to come, in support of the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals and beyond.

This Deep Dive session provides an opportunity to learn from and input into this process by exchanging on the back of insights about the challenges and opportunities for business to catalyze transformation of major economic systems (food, energy, mobility, etc.). Participants will hear about research of trends and issues that will most likely shape the operating environment for business over the next ten years and will be able to take these findings into their own companies to inform business strategy and planning while also identifying opportunities for products and services required into the next decade.

Deep Dive (1:45-3:30 pm at Mountain Shadows): How to Shape Your Sustainability Story

Workshop
Paradise Ballroom South, Mountain Shadows

According to Shelton Group’s research, 41% of Americans would like to be perceived as buyers of eco-friendly products. And 63% say a company’s environmental reputation impacts their purchase decisions. Consumers can increasingly name brands that they’ve purchased (or not purchased) because of their environmental record. Bottom line: Great actions for the planet without a great story to match is a huge missed opportunity to drive brand preference and sales. But that doesn’t mean you should talk about everything you’re doing for the planet. You need to focus on what matters most to consumers, what they expect from your category and brand, and what you can uniquely "own." Join this session to learn from corporate sustainability leaders who will share their process for creating their story, as well as how they’ve used the story in their ongoing marketing communications work. You'll also have the opportunity to workshop the process for yourself, with help from Suzanne and these experts.

Understanding Your Biodiversity Impacts to Help Life Thrive

Workshop
Arizona Ballroom L-M, Camelback Inn

Governments and businesses must consider water use, GHG emissions and biodiversity indicators in order to achieve sustainable development. For two of the three, society has been able to develop metrics and SMART targets. The last, biodiversity, has proved more difficult to measure due of its unique inherent place-based complexity and variability. But protecting the biodiversity that makes up Earth’s environment is essential for ensuring a healthy and productive planet. This session will share a new multi-step framework developed through a collaborative partnership comprised of three environmental organizations, Conservation International, Flora and Fauna International, UNEP-WCMC, as well as multiple extractive-sector companies engaged in piloting the approach. The partnership will identify and develop indicators that track from site-level impact upwards to a company dashboard. These indicators will allow companies to better measure and address their direct impact on biodiversity and make more informed decisions, while also being able to report on their contribution toward global biodiversity targets, such as the Sustainable Development Goals.

Why Policy Advocacy is Critical for Corporate Climate Leadership

This session will cover the business benefits of engaging in policy advocacy and introduce a framework to help attendees navigate what it takes to adopt and execute on a corporate climate policy agenda. We are entering a new era of sustainability leadership — given the scale of the issues we face and the very limited timeframe we have to solve them, we need to challenge business as usual and sustainability models of old that enable business to do less harm rather than doing more good. An approach of regeneration and restoration provides a compelling model to show how business can truly be a force for good.

Plastics Pledges and Climate Commitments: Traversing the Tradeoffs

Workshop
Paradise Ballroom 5-6, Camelback Inn

With the uptick in NGO calls to action and consumer pressure against single-use plastics, more packaging companies, brands and retailers are making bold commitments to rethink their material use for a circular economy. But some businesses seeking to reduce the plastics footprint of their products have set goals and signed pacts without consideration for the systemic impacts, including science-based targets and other sustainability goals. This can lead to conflicting priorities and ineffective action. This breakout will help your company align climate commitments with sustainability goals and circular aspirations, and navigate the trade-offs of each. We'll explore how to assess existing and planned sustainability targets, and consider holistic impacts across these metrics before taking counterproductive action.

Putting People First: How to Be a Force for Good in Your Labor Practices

Workshop
Arizona Ballroom D-E, Camelback Inn

An estimated 40 million people are victims of modern slavery, of which 25 million are in situations of forced labor. Of the 25 million, 16 million are in the private sector - generating $150 billion in illegal profits in the private economy. Violations of human and labor rights in supply chains have drawn the attention of governments, NGOs, and the public, and put pressure on companies to take action to maintain responsible and transparent supply chains. Critically, companies need to be a strong force to improve the conditions under which people labor in their global supply chains. The seafood industry, the apparel industry, and the coffee sector provide a source of income and support the livelihoods of more than 350 million producers around the globe. The world drinks more than 600 billion cups of coffee, consumes more than 150 million metric tons of seafood per year and imports apparel products at a value of US$127 billion. Yet, the raw materials are often first sourced in regions where the livelihoods of the farming and fishing communities are vulnerable. And workers are often the most vulnerable. As supply chains have become increasingly complex and globalized, workers’ rights and protections have been eroded. Labor violations drive social instability, poverty, and natural resource decline. These factors put businesses at financial and reputational risk due to vulnerable workforce practices that may include child labor, forced labor, hazardous working conditions, long hours and low pay. Join this session to learn how your company can rise to the challenge of ethical labor practices,  ensure co-benefits for people alongside positive environmental and climate outcomes, and truly make a difference for the better in peoples' lives and communities deep in your supply chains

Fiduciary Duty: Equipping Boards for the Challenges Ahead

Workshop
Arizona Ballroom J-K, Camelback Inn

The board of directors is responsible for setting the course of business strategy, taking advantage of disruptions, anticipating risks that could undermine the strategy and business model, and promoting the long-term success of the company. "Business as usual" is no longer relevant in protecting and creating value in the disruptive social, economic and environmental issues that are challenging the assumptions companies have made in the past about the availability of resources, supply chains and consumer preferences. Many business processes tend to look to the past to predict the future but those models are increasingly coming under scrutiny and failing, leaving companies unprepared for the current challenges they face. Board education has typically focused on maximizing shareholder value over the short-term and not given enough attention to "externalities" and their potential to destroy value and harm a company’s brand and reputation. This session takes a fresh look at how board training needs to be made fit for the 21st century.

This session will look through the lens of a company’s business model to consider impact, dependencies and insights from global companies on how these issues are being tackled in the boardrooms of successful companies. The speakers will bring legal, governance and financial expertise to provide an understanding of the changes happening in boardrooms around the world. They will share findings of the WBCSD’s Governance project which has involved interviews with non-executive directors across 12 countries.

This session will help sustainability professionals find solutions to engaging with the board through a simulation of real challenges companies are facing today so that participants can take away effective strategies for collaborating with boards. The key is to demonstrate how ESG issues are critical to business success and should be embedded within mainstream business processes and decision-making. The session will showcase strategies and tools that can be used to help strengthen governance and promote sustainable performance.

The Role of Business in Biodiversity and Conservation

Arizona Ballroom, Camelback Inn

Biodiversity is fundamental to human well-being and a healthy planet, but biodiversity loss and species extinction is currently happening at an alarming rate. According to a draft plan from the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity, world leaders must enact protections for at least 30 percent of the world's land and oceans in the next decade to protect current biodiversity levels and avert the extinction of many species. But we shouldn’t stop there, of course. "Transformative changes across economic, social, political and technological factors" will be necessary to reach environmental goals, the plan states. Hear from Dr. Helen Crowley, head of sustainable sourcing innovation at Kering and fellow and senior advisor for resilient supply chains at Conservation International, on how business must play an essential role in addressing climate and biodiversity challenges.
