Partner Event: CDP Global Supply Chain Report Launch and Science-Based Target Workshop

Managing climate risk and mitigating the impacts of climate change requires companies to reduce emissions in their own operations and their global supply chains. Recognizing this, companies have transformed their approach to environmental management by moving from a low-level of visibility and short-term internal goals to setting forward-looking public targets and collaborating on ambitious climate action with their suppliers. Join CDP as we discuss 10 years of emissions management in supply chains and hold an in-depth workshop on science-based targets where we will share the latest updates to SBTi criteria and resources. We will also explore how ambitious climate commitments like RE100, EP10 and EV100 are essential in achieving these ambitious climate goals and in driving the economy wide low-carbon transition.

Tutorial: The Ethical Circular Economy

Tutorial
Grand Sonoran F

The term circular economy continues to gain traction in the private sector across Europe and the United States as a powerful approach to product and service development, urban infrastructure and economic development for maximum resource efficiency and effectiveness by closing loops in design, distribution and disposal of products and materials. This interactive Tutorial will be  facilitated by circular economy, innovation and sustainability experts from Arizona State Univesity, which was named the nation’s most innovative university in the US for four straight years by US News and World Report.

GreenBiz 19 In-Depth Tutorials are intensive half-day sessions held prior to the start of the conference. These are designed to offer participants an opportunity to dive deeper into a topic of interest and develop tangible knowledge and skills. In addition, attendees will have a greater opportunity to network with their peers in these interactive sessions. Tutorial: Fundamentals of Renewable Energy Procurement

Tutorial
Grand Sonoran J-K

It's official: 2018 was the largest year on record (so far!) for newly announced corporate renewable energy projects. Now an established business practice for companies seeking environmental sustainability advantages, large-scale renewable energy procurement has become a well-understood exercise for some companies, while still holding many opportunities for advancement and innovation.

After a foundational market update, this tutorial will feature moderated discussions:

  • One set of discussions will focus on the best practices and options for sourcing large-scale solar, wind and other clean power resources for their companies or organizations. The speakers and facilitators will lead intimate conversations about emerging trends in off-site corporate procurement of renewable energy (the why); the fundamentals of energy markets, what's required to execute transactions and the process most buyers take (the how); and offer a high-level overview of risks present in off-site transactions (the what). These issues will be explored and discussed from the buyers’ point of view.
  • The second will review topics related to emerging trends related to corporate renewables procurement. The speakers will review the state of aggregated purchasing options; advanced risk management techniques; and a discussion of supply chain strategies — including common hurdles, current consensus around solutions and key areas of innovation in supply chain renewables.

An all-access pass is required to participate.

Contextualizing Water Goals: From Good Intentions to Local Action on Water Scarcity

Workshop
Grand Sonoran H-I
Water scarcity is the new normal. Based on our current trajectory, the world will face a 40 percent shortfall in freshwater by 2030. That’s not just a problem; it’s a global crisis waiting to happen. Accordingly, companies will have to move on from the current flush-and-forget model and begin reducing, reusing and recycling their water. Many companies have corporate water goals, but they are not enough. Water is a localized resource and geographic context is key. Some regions struggle with water quality, some with quantity and many with both. An effective approach to solving for water scarcity must be local and context-based. That means facility by facility, with solutions tailored to each site’s local watershed. It will require bridging the gap between good intentions and effective action at the local level – and translating corporate goals into practical action steps for individual facilities around the world. During this session, we’ll hear from companies on the journeys towards sustainable water practices, and learn about tools, strategies and innovative approaches to setting and acting on context-based water goals.

Measuring Progress in the Circular Economy

Workshop
Grand Sonoran F

Measuring progress in the circular economy is far from a linear process. As competing and often conflicting metrics and frameworks pop up across industry sectors, there is a clear need to align definitions at the product, company and supply chain levels. During this interactive session, attendees will learn about the World Business Council for Sustainable Development’s framework to measure circularity; hear from companies employing this methodology; and have the opportunity to provide input on this model.

Rate the Raters: Which Ratings Do Companies and Investors Find Most Credible and Why?

Workshop
Grand Sonoran H-I
Ratings and rankings have become the bane of many a sustainability professional's existence. But whether you like them or hate them, they have a significant role to play in our industry. From 2010-2012, SustainAbility launched a multi-phase research program, Rate the Raters (RtR) designed to influence and improve the quality and transparency of corporate sustainability ratings. Six years after the last RtR publication, we found that corporates still struggle with how to decide which ratings and rankings to prioritize. During winter 2018, SustainAbility completed an updated survey in partnership with Globescan, asking sustainability professionals which ratings they believe are of the highest quality. Our research is continuing into 2019 to investigate which ratings investors find most credible and why. This session will share highlights from the research so far. Join us to understand what constitutes ratings best practice to both corporate respondents and investors, how companies, ratings agencies and investors can collaborate to improve the process holistically, and how companies can prioritize where to spend their time on ratings and rankings. Participants will leave the panel session with insights into which ratings their sustainability professional peers and investors find most credible and how they can make their internal ratings response process more efficient.

The Forgotten Solution to Climate Change: Nature

Workshop
Grand Sonoran G

How we manage land, forests, and habitat is a critical, yet often overlooked, solution in the fight against climate change. Improvements to land stewardship – Natural Climate Solutions – could mitigate a third of what is needed to meet global climate commitments. Natural climate solutions can also preserve biodiversity, strengthen agricultural resilience, improve water and air quality – not to mention the potential to provide employment and reduce costs associated with basic needs. Hear how International Paper is collaborating with The Nature Conservancy to catalyze these natural climate solutions in Gabon and Indonesia – and how Capital One is making strides in the Central Appalachians of the United States – by working with governments, NGOs, and the private sector to advance climate smart forestry.

From Global Strategy to Local Action: Improving Water Security and Addressing Deforestation Linked to Your Supply Chain

Workshop
Grand Canyon 10-11

Deforestation and water security are an increasing threat to companies’ reputations and ability to operate, around the world. Recognizing these risks, companies are rising to the occasion by making zero-deforestation commitments and increasing attention to water security risks. However, achieving these objectives is a significant challenge: water and deforestation risks frequently lie outside a company’s direct operations requiring them to engage suppliers and build capacity to address the root cause. In addition, water security and deforestation are inherently local issues that require collaborating with multiple stakeholders to manage. Join CDP and panelists for a Latin American case study to learn how companies are evaluating, and importantly, addressing these challenges by working collaboratively with their suppliers to drive local change.

Responding to Investors’ ESG Demands: Getting the Right Data to the Right People

Workshop
Grand Sonoran E

In sustainability circles we talk a lot about the voice of “the investor” – but what does an investor look like and what information do they seek? The diversity of types of investors offers an opportunity for companies to consider engagement, but presents a challenge in focusing information that a variety of investors will find “decision useful”. How do we balance diverse needs for information with the risk of information overload? This session will review work by the Sustainable Stock Exchange Initiative, World Federation of Exchanges and even state-level initiatives that are driving data availability for investors.

Laying the Foundation for a Shared, Sustainable Commute

Grand Canyon 9
Whether you’re a bleeding edge technologist who believes autonomous vehicles will revolutionize transportation by 2020, or a believer in short-term evolutions like scooters, we all believe the next generation will witness significant evolutions in every major transportation offering.

While many of us are excited by the future potential of mobility, we’re also faced with real challenges that impact commuters and communities today. Ultimately, we need to answer:

  1. What investments can employers and public entities make today to implement sustainable transportation options, reduce costs, and improve quality of life for our commuters?
  2. What foundational thinking, groundwork, and investments do we need to consider now to achieve the full potential of future sustainable modes?

We’ll help sustainability professionals discover new approaches to change behavior and incentivize shared transportation modes through case studies across public and private partnerships, from Fortune 500 employers to public transit. You’ll walk away with a better understanding of potential sustainable mobility futures, and steps you can take today to ensure a shared, collaborative ecosystem of mobility options for your business and future generations.

System Change for Sustainability

Grand Saguaro North & South

What if we could accelerate the rate of change needed to deliver the Sustainable Development Goals? What if, in the light of the scale and urgency of the sustainability challenges we face, there are practical ways of making sure everything we do in business drives change that is catalytic and transformative, not incremental? This is the potential of system change for sustainability. And we begin to unlock it by understanding the problem we are solving for using a systems lens, and ensuring our strategies deliver systemic, pioneering interventions, from new market mechanisms to harmonised criteria for sustainability standards. Rethinking corporate sustainability strategies to not only transform your organisation, but the system around you, is how we will deliver the SDGs.

Putting Truth Back in Beauty

Grand Saguaro North & South

Decades of studies indicate that serious health issues (including but not limited to asthma, cancer, and infertility) are on the rise and are due in some part to our ongoing exposure to toxic chemicals—whether it's in the shower, on our commute, while we eat lunch at a local restaurant, or when we clean our kitchens at home. There are more than 80,000 chemicals on the market today. Many don't have any safety data. This is particularly true of those used in the skin care and beauty industry. Hear from Beautycounter Founder & CEO, Gregg Renfrew, on her mission to get safer products into the hands of everyone.

GreenBiz Guru Lunch: The Intersection of Sustainability and Trust

Lunch
Sunset Lawn

The 2019 Edelman Trust Barometer reveals that trust has changed profoundly in the past year – people have shifted their trust to the relationships within their control, most notably their employers. Globally, 75 percent of people trust their employer to do what is right, more than NGOs (57 percent), business (56 percent) and media (47 percent). However, employers must go beyond “business as usual.” Employees’ expectation that employers will join them in taking action on societal issues is now nearly as high as their expectations of personal empowerment and job opportunity. Join Alexandra Talleur from Edelman’s Business + Social Purpose team to discuss how sustainability intertwines with trust, and ideate on how employers can earn and harness trust for good.

GreenBiz Guru Lunch: Dos and Don’ts of Brands Taking Stands

Over the past year, some of America’s largest companies have leveraged their brand recognition to help tackle societal and environmental issues, including Nike, Levi's, Walmart, and, most recently, Gillette. Should your company join them? There are risks of doing so. But as consumers, employees, NGOs, and investors increasingly expect companies to speak out on public issues, sitting back and letting others do the talking can pose an even greater risk to a company's brand and bottom line. Join Future 500’s Director of Stakeholder Engagement, Kellen Klein, and take some dos and don’ts back to the office with you on what goes right – and what goes awry – when brands take stands.

GreenBiz Guru Lunch: Leveraging Connected Buildings to Advance Sustainability Initiatives

Lunch
Sunset Lawn

Buildings are where the magic happens in our organizations. It’s where company culture forms. They house and support our businesses and our employees, and they enable collaboration and unlock creativity. They keep us warm in the winter, cool in the summer and they can make us both healthy and unhealthy, if operated improperly. In the day and age of maturing IoT technologies, our buildings can run far more efficiently: they can optimize themselves, track our workforce, improve campus security, and make a major dent in our organizations’ environmental footprints. Employees increasingly bring their passion for causes into the workplace and expect management to respond to their expectations with new behaviors both inside and outside the workplace. Yet, less than 1 percent of 401(k) plans offer some type of socially responsible fund for employees. Learn why this is so and what your company can do to align its retirement plans with its values.

Unifying Supply Chain Data for Enhanced Action on Labor and Human Rights

Grand Canyon 9

Global companies are committing more and more energy to eliminating forced labor, modern slavery, human trafficking, and other labor issues from their supply chains. But as they set out to tackle these issues, they quickly discover their blind spots. How can businesses create a more strategic view of labor in their networks so they can truly target for impact and make the best sourcing decisions possible? Join SupplyShift, Verisk Maplecroft, and Ulula for a discussion on the latest tools and approaches enabling end-to-end visibility of labor and human rights issues in global supply chains. The panel will offer insights on the latest strategies combining risk, supplier diligence, and worker voice data feeds for better predictability, risk mitigation, and to enhance their understanding of global labor information as a whole.

Plastic waste in our environment is an urgent issue with major, adverse impacts to wildlife, the health of ecosystems and livelihoods. But solving this crisis means going beyond one-off solutions and, instead, fixing a system that is fundamentally broken. No Plastic in Nature, a recently released report from World Wildlife Fund (WWF), shines new light into the critical role that business plays in driving systemic change forward.

This session will highlight key report findings, and offer practical, actionable insights for companies seeking to address the plastic waste problem in meaningful and effective ways.

How to Win Cross Functional Buy-In Through Hearts and Minds

Workshop
Grand Sonoran C-D

Employee engagement is essential to embedding sustainability throughout a company and making it an important and visible part of everyone’s role, but effective execution is an ever-present challenge. Mario and Shannon took on this challenge, travelling to 12 cement plants in 9 countries in Europe and the Caribbean with the goal of shifting mindsets of cross-functional teams regarding social innovation. Using empathy and role playing, they were able to realize transformational changes in the commitment and creativity of their operational teams on-the-ground and roll out a global CSR strategy as a bottom-up intervention. Join this interactive session to learn how you can reach the “unconverted” and develop new leaders and advocates on the journey towards sustainable business.

Beyond the Choir: Building Broad-Based Public Will for Climate and Water Progress

Workshop
Grand Sonoran A-B

Scientists have been sounding alarms about climate and water issues for decades. If anything, however, the American public’s awareness and willingness to act has declined. What do we know about how Americans really relate to water and climate change, and how those issues intersect?  How can we all do a better job of engaging our employees, customers, neighbors, and audiences in mobilizing action and creating solutions that transcend political, economic, geographic and ethnic divides? What do we do when it seems even basic science lacks public trust? Join Amy Skoczlas Cole, managing director of American Public Media’s Water Main initiative, and Cara Pike, executive director of Climate Access, in an interactive session designed to debunk engagement myths, retire ineffective strategies, and move the conversation from preaching to the choir to building genuine public will and engaged constituencies that are poised and able to take action.

Climate Change, Nature and Land Use: Opportunities for Positive Scale

Workshop
Grand Canyon 10-11

The October 2018  report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) indicates that the climate is changing more rapidly than previously understood. IPCC’s new and aggressive recommendations for governmental policy interventions will have major implications for business within the next few years. Many companies are not waiting for additional governmental policies and are already taking significant steps to limit the impacts of emissions across their value chain using an obvious and underleveraged North American resource – our lands, soils and forests. Join this session to learn from leading business executives and their work in utilizing land-based solutions to minimize emissions, move toward science-based targets, and expand business opportunities.

Workshop
Grand Sonoran J-K

Responsible Sourcing for a Low Carbon Future

Workshop
Grand Sonoran G

With the move toward a low-carbon future, products ranging from electronics and appliances to electric vehicles and solar equipment are met with societal expectations about the acquisition of the materials within them. The sourcing of minerals and metals — whether they be hard to find, require intensive amounts of water or energy to mine, or come from countries with weak governance and poor human rights practices — presents challenges and choices for businesses and consumers. How do companies address these challenges as the demand for metals is expected to grow by more than 100 percent in the coming decades? In this session, sustainability leaders will discuss questions concerning the sourcing of metals and minerals as well as recycling and reporting.

The Purpose-Sustainability Link

Workshop
Grand Sonoran C-D

Join this session to hear two leading companies discuss the close link between purpose and sustainability. For Kohler, embracing sustainability led to a company-wide transformation — inspiring and engaging employees, activating partners they’d never considered, and leading to the development of new revenue-generating products. Thanks to these successes, realizations and paradigm shifts, the company discovered its ability to be a catalyst for change, and purpose is now a major tenet of corporate strategy. By contrast, at Steelcase, the process worked in reverse: the company’s focus on driving a sense of purpose in the workplace drove its commitment to sustainable business practices. Join this session to explore the steps, milestones and benchmarks that you can use to develop a strategy for your organization, whether you start with purpose to drive sustainability or start with sustainability to drive purpose.

Tackling Food Waste at Scale

Workshop
Grand Sonoran F

The United States throws away 63 million tons of food annually. The financial impact translates into a loss of $218 billion — or 1.3 percent of the GDP — that is wasted from growing, processing, transporting and disposing of food that is never actually eaten. As more companies work to prevent food waste, however, they are faced with challenging trade-offs in scale, impact and implementation — sometimes swapping one problem for another. Learn about how to effectively tackle food waste at scale, navigate conflicting priorities and generating new economic value in the process.

Sustainable Finance: The Importance of Transparency and Disclosure

Workshop
Grand Canyon 10-11

As the realities of climate change become more evident, pressure is increasingly being placed on financial institutions to be more responsible in their lending – particularly when it comes to fossil fuel companies and projects. Dozens of financial institutions have embraced sustainable finance commitments that aim to support economic growth while reducing pressures on the environment, addressing carbon and other greenhouse gas emissions, minimizing waste, and improving resource efficiency.  However, because there is no agreed-upon methodology or approach regarding the types of transactions included when accounting for progress against sustainable finance goals, the long- and short-term impacts and overall value of these commitments are often unclear.  This panel will discuss TCFD recommendations and other disclosures financial institutions can make with regard to their sustainable finance commitments in order to satisfy their stakeholders’ demands for more responsible environmental finance.

Unraveling the Exploitation of Workers in Supply Chains

Workshop
Grand Sonoran G

Forced labor refers to situations in which persons are coerced to work through the use of violence or intimidation, or by more subtle means such as manipulated debt, retention of identity papers or threats of denunciation to immigration authorities (ILO). In these situations, workers lack the alternatives needed to defend against such coercion. Forced labor is illegal, but supply chains with 0% human rights abuses do not exist, even when certified or vertically integrated. A company can and should take action when sourcing, but it can often be difficult to know where to start, especially in situations where it is difficult to see into the supply chain. In this session we will explore ways to successfully implement practices that help unveil the exploitation of workers in supply chains if it is happening, as well as explore opportunities for multi-stakeholder collaboration that can lead to more transparency and improved understanding of the issue and the solutions.

Renewable Project Aggregation: How Does It Work?

Workshop
Grand Sonoran J-K

Several large tech companies have committed to 100 percent renewable energy — and procured enough solar and wind power to match their consumption and reach that milestone. However, most businesses struggle with the process of negotiating power purchase agreements (PPAs) or other types of RE contracts directly with developers. This session will explore creative ways that companies can collaborate to aggregate their demand for renewable energy — thereby sharing costs, resources and project risk.
